February 15: The Power of Pause

Over the past few years, I've done a lot of personal development work, and it's been amazing to start seeing the strategies and tools I once struggled with becoming second nature. It's kind of like learning to tie your shoes or drive a car—you put so much attention into the steps at first, but eventually, it just becomes automatic. What used to feel difficult now flows easily, and that's how growth works.

One of the most powerful lessons I took away from Tony Robbins at my first UPW was the commitment to live in a beautiful state. For me, this means consciously choosing to feel joy and love, and giving myself just 90 seconds to process any negative emotions in response to challenging situations. One simple practice that ties in with this is the power of pausing before responding. Whether in a tough conversation or facing a challenge, taking a deep breath and giving yourself a moment to center yourself can totally shift your approach. This pause helps you choose a response that aligns with your values, instead of reacting out of habit or emotion.

So today, when you notice a situation that triggers an immediate reaction, take a deep breath (and celebrate the awareness), count to three or ten or twenty, and respond with intention. For me, this paused moment I remind myself of my commitment to living in a beautiful state, no matter what. Notice the shift, and over time, you’ll see how this small practice can lead to big personal growth.
